Ilish (Tenualosa ilisha), also known as the ilishi or hilsa, is a species of fish closely related to the herring. Its popularity extends across the Indian subcontinent, but it truly shines in the coastal waters of the Bay of Bengal. It’s the national fish of Bangladesh and in West Bengal, India, it proudly wears the title of state fish.
